Clothing Consultation
Stylish, Timeless, and Unique. Your clothing choice has a lot to do with if these words can summarize your photos from your session. There is a delicate balance between not caring at all about your clothing choices and being obsessive! I prefer clients NOT to wear the SAME outfit.
These are only suggestions…but I HIGHLY recommend following them!
1. Be comfortable and feel relaxed! Pick an outfit out that makes you feel beautiful and COMFORTABLE!
The most important recommendation is keep outfits fairly simple, add a little spice with accessories. Wear the colors and outfits that you feel best in. Most people DO NOT look great in white (except Queen Elizabeth) Consider how the color compliments your skin tone. Peach = bad (and it could also make you look naked if you have lighter skin!) I also recommend steering clear of black. You are welcome to bring along your own props or a favorite things (good ones are vintage chairs!).
2. Families/Engagement Sessions/Maternity – I would suggest whoever is most pickiest about clothing (or who has the most fashion sense!) to pick out their outfit and have other members coordinate around them. This usually works best when the woman does this – so pick out your favorite outfit and coordinate everyone to compliment you! Notice I said coordinate not match, read on…
Coordinate for balance, harmony, and color. Subtle shades of color look best. Clothing in medium shades complement outdoor portraits. Jeans are perfect for any background. Tennis shoes generally do not photograph well – loafers, flats, sandals, and heels (comfort!) are usually the best. Long sleeved (or 3⁄4 length) tops in solid colors. (Stay away from bold patterns, there are exceptions for this.)
The traditional earthy tones also work best for outdoor.
Here are some other things that are good to bring to the session with kids involved: snacks, their comfort item (only to be used in a time of emergency if you don’t want it in the photos), a neutral toy that is good at getting their attention (possibly a new one), blanket, change of clothes.
If you are considering buying a new outfit for this occasion I think my style looks best with clothing bought from: Anthropologie, Gap, or Ruche
My overall suggestion for clothing:
Families: Pick 1 or 2 simple colors (orange, green, blue, etc.) put these colors sporadically and lightly throughout everyone else’s wardrobe. For instance, have one person wear a shirt with a little of orange in it, another with an orange necklace, another with orange scarf.
Couples: Follow the same advice above and think about the feel you want to have for your portraits. If you want to look like models, dress like them! Coordinate for the same style, it would look silly if the girl was wearing a dress and the guy was wearing shorts and a t-shirt.
Kids (alone): Make sure if your kid cannot sit up or walk yet that their clothing does not get in their face. For instance, while overalls are so adorable (and I’m tearing up by almost swearing them off right now!) when kids who can’t stand by themselves wear them they often puck up and get in the faces way.
